In Praise of Possums…

Opossums never inspired much of my time or attention before but lately, more than a few lie dead in or alongside the road. Aside from being accused of “playing possum” as a child, I knew very little about them.

Opossums are not rats!
Before studying them more thoroughly, I had dismissed them as a type of creepy rodent, but alas! Not so – not true at all.

In fact, opossums, or possums as they are often called, not only are NOT rodents, but they are the only marsupials living in the United States and Canada. Like kangaroos that we find more appealing, they are mammals that carry their young in a pouch.

New babies, according to National Geographic, tiny as honeybees, are born after a gestation period of only 12-13 days in litters up to 20 “joeys”, but fewer than half survive to crawl into their mother’s pouch where they are nurtured for about 4 months.

Michael Lipske, writing for National Wildlife Federation (NWF), thinks the opossum is not well thought of because of its long, naked tail. Even so, their tails are part of what makes them unique.

pc_opossum

(Photo from: http://www.caryinstitute.org/sites/default/files/public/images/podcasts/pc_opossum.jpg)

Like monkeys, opossums can wrap their tails around branches to help them climb trees. They can even carry grass and other vegetation—material they use to line their dens—in their coiled tails.

Opossums are not rabies carriers!
Another popular misconception is that possums carry rabies; wrong! In fact, according to the National Opossum Society’s fact page, possums are less susceptible to rabies than cats, dogs, cattle, goats and humans!

Opossums do have their weaknesses…
Yet, they are not perfect or perfectly harmless; they do carry fleas, may sometimes attack chickens and bite people who try to grab them.

They can be bothersome as foragers that knock over trash cans and sneak into pet food when left outside and uncovered. On the other hand, they catch and eat many real pests including cockroaches and beetles, rats and mice, snails and slugs. Opossums also eat roadkill, an activity that often leads to their own deaths.

But also their unique strengths…
NWF suggests we reconsider our feelings about opossums. After all, they eat rattlesnakes and survive their bites. This is significant in that:

Researchers are studying the toxin-neutralizing factor in opossum blood in hopes that it can be adapted as an anti-venom in humans.

Opossums help control Lyme disease!
Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies report on the Virginia opossum revealed they groom themselves in much the same way as cats. Although they forage in tick-infested areas, they “hoover up” killing 90-95 percent of ticks that try to feed on them. Thus, they are important warriors against Lyme disease.

For the good they do, opossums deserve protection
Opossums “play dead” when frightened by predators, and when facing oncoming traffic in roadways. The National Wildlife Federation found they can maintain a death-pose for hours, even defecating and exuding green slime from anal glands as part of the act.

Ecologists, environmentalists and wildlife experts ask motorists to do their best to go around opossums on the road that appear to be dead, and not to hit them intentionally. They ask homeowners to tolerate them in their yards, noting they stay only 2-3 days in one place, moving frequently between their nesting areas.

Not really that ugly…

Supporters hope word gets out about the contributions opossums make to ecology, the environment and human health. If so, perceptions can change, and people may begin to think of the odd little creatures as a little more attractive!

Heads and minds in the Clouds

Head in the clouds from time to time is not a bad thing, in fact, everyone should take some time away from the troubles of the world. And, while drifting awhile “up there” putting our minds on the clouds can be interesting and informative.

From the windows of an airplane on a recent flight thick layers of clouds scattered here and there looked like handfuls of mini-marshmallows. It’s fun finding familiar shapes in the clouds. And while the Bible speaks metaphorically of a “cloud of witnesses,” sometimes it seems we actually can see human faces and forms looking down from above.

In fourth grade long ago my teacher set up a contest wherein one student’s letter would be chosen and mailed to the National Weather Service to ask for a wall chart of cloud types.

That memory while flying through the marshmallow sky rekindled an interest in clouds. A little research shows that several people have put their minds on clouds and written a lot about them.

For example a certain Brit, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, so loves clouds and cloud-spotting that he formed the Cloud Appreciation Society.  Cloud Appreciation Society

“Friends” from around the world can sign up for free; join as a “Member” for the equivalent of U.S. $12 plus $19.45 annually; or as a “Supporting Member” for $12 plus $35.30 annually. Gift memberships cost $12 plus $14.40 for the first year; the latter three rates also cover shipping of a package of cloud-spotting tools and logos.

CloudSpot AppAnd to bring it all into the digital world, for only $2.99 iPhone owners can download the Society’s cloud-spotting app and explore 40 cloud types and submit photos.

Digital technology makes it possible for anyone interested to capture and share cloud images from wherever they find them. Margaret LeMone, a cloud researcher in the Boulder, Colorado National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), said that cloud enthusiasts can be helpful to meteorologists.

Cloud Collectors HandbookPretor-Pinney also wrote the Cloud Collector’s Handbook, and as reported in June 2009 on NationalGeographic.com, has named what may be the first of a new type of cloud since 1951 – the undulatus asperatus.  Click through the link to see photographs of the thick, rolling-ocean-wave type clouds submitted by laypersons to National Geographic.

National Geographic published a related article in 2010 about studies since the 1940s of hole-punch clouds, the discovery that airplanes create them, and furthermore,  “that aircraft can unleash precipitation by carving the cloud tunnels, which had never before been observed.”

Time magazine online in June 2011 summarized National Center for Atmospheric Research’s (NCAR) studies concluding that more rain and snow fall around commercial airports.

… under certain atmospheric conditions – cloud layers with temperatures about 5 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, for example. When planes fly through these cloud layers, the tips of their propellers make the surrounding air rapidly expand and cool. The supercooled water droplets in the clouds then freeze into ice particles and turn into snow or rain as they fall to the ground, leaving behind both changed weather and the intricate gaps in the clouds….

Apparently, airplanes create new kinds of weather-changing clouds.

Although an old Sonny Bono song declaring that “It’s gonna rain outside, I can tell by the clouds in the sky…,” is one indicator that traditionally, people watched the clouds to predict the weather, those lyrics may have to be updated to say “…I can tell by the clouds and the planes in the sky!”

For now, however, the National Weather Service classifies clouds according to three categories and ten basic types that represent sunny, warm, cold and/or stormy conditions:

  • High clouds
    • Cirrus
    • Cirrostratus
    • Cirrocumulus
  • Mid clouds
    • Altostratus
    • Altocumulus
    • Nimbostratus
  • Low clouds
    • Cumulus
    • Stratus
    • Cumulonimbus
    • Stratocumulus

Kids interested in learning about clouds and how to predict weather by cloud-spotting will find resources online, such as WeatherWizKids.com.

Caution – Turtle Crossing

Google search returned 580,000 responses to the question “Why did the turtle cross the road?” but it is not at all about jokes looking for punchlines.

In fact, female turtles in early summer are often on a mission to return to their familiar nesting grounds with the eggs they carry, as explained in an article by the Mid-Atlantic Turtle & Tortoise Society (MATTS). Others are moving between wetlands habitats, and still other young turtles are searching out a place to live.

The nation’s turtle population declines every year because they are killed by automobiles.  Yet, many drivers and passengers, seeing them on the roads, instinctively want to help them get safely across. MATTS offers tips and for snapping turtles, a video demonstration because of the need for special handling.

Most importantly, drivers must not put themselves in danger on busy roadways. If possible on a road without traffic, let the turtle cross on its own. And, if safe and necessary to help it along, move it by the shortest distance possible, away from the roadside and in the same direction it was headed when first spotted.

Thoughtful motorists will obey speed limits and keep watch for the fascinatingly odd creatures which are the oldest living reptiles on earth.

Read about Missouri’s turtles in the Missouri Department of Conservation report whose cover page is shown below.

MoTurtles

Fourteen (14) of Missouri’s 17 turtle species are protected and on the endangered list.

It is illegal to shoot or in any way to harm or kill protected turtles.

Violations should be reported to local conservation agent, or by toll-free, 24/7 hotline: 1-800-392-1111.

Operation Game Thief  offers rewards from $50 to $1,000 to individuals who wish to be considered for rewards when arrests result from reported actual or suspected wildlife violations.

Individuals may report anonymously, if preferred.

Poaching includes collecting live animals and native species such as turtles, lizards, snakes and frogs – for sale.

Collecting turtles for pets poses a threat to their well-being as well. The stress of an unnatural environment could kill them. Alternatively, marshy areas and woodlands on personal property can provide them a safe and natural environment.

Other facts about turtles reported by the Department of Conservation: they are not harmful to game fish, or to swimmers who leave them undisturbed, and are “beneficial scavengers.”

“In God We Trust”

In 1952 the Reverend Billy Graham “…staged the first formal religious service held on the Capitol steps” in Washington, D.C. (Kevin M. Kruse, New York Times, March 14, 2015).

In fact, Kruse wrote, Graham persuaded Congress that same year to establish the National Day of Prayer, this year to be held on Thursday, May 5.

Graham contributed Scriptures for Dwight Eisenhower’s presidential campaign speeches, a campaign the candidate said was motivated by a spiritual renewal “mandate.”

Kruse recounted the lasting impact and influence on the political scene of Billy Graham and other Christian leaders of the time, leading to adoption in 1956 of the national motto, “In God We Trust.”

Today, Billy Graham’s son, Franklin, leads a similar but broader movement in advance of the November 8 presidential election. The younger Graham is holding prayer rallies on each of the capitol buildings of the 50 states.

His “Decision America” rally in Missouri will be held May 17, 2016 at 12:00 noon on the Capitol South steps in Jefferson City.

Identity Theft, the IRS and You

Online filers of federal or state income tax increasingly are at risk of losing their refunds because of rampant and sophisticated identity thieves.

Several case scenarios find an individual filing a return but rather than finding the expected refund in their bank accounts or the mailbox, they received a letter from the IRS advising them their return had already been filed and their refund already paid!

Data breaches elsewhere give hackers an edge

Michael Cohn, editor-in-chief of AccountingToday.com, explained that hackers are using data stolen through breaches of other corporate and government systems to get access to tax information stored in IRS servers.

A recent example is the breach of the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) data that left the personal information of millions of federal employees – past and present – exposed. Cohn said in the April 14, 2016 article about breaches of IRS data over the past year that:

Taxpayer data was fraudulently accessed, not through a forcible compromise of the computer systems, but by hackers who correctly answered security questions that should have only been answerable by the actual individual.

Cohn wrote about reforms Congress mandated in 1998 for the IRS that have not been completed, a result, he wrote, of billions of dollars of cuts to the agency’s budget over the years.

Federal and state collaboration

The Security Summit, a group comprised of representatives of the IRS, departments of revenue from the fifty states, and tax software providers announced enhanced protections against breaches of IRS data.

The Summit added steps to the online filing process for 2016 with the goal to verify taxpayer identity before the return is processed. These include:

  • taxpayers who received an IP PIN must use it. The six-digit number serves to prevent misuse of social security numbers, and will be sent every year before the tax season begins, and a new PIN will be sent each year;
  • IP PIN notices dated January 4, 2016 erroneously refer to 2014 returns, but are valid for 2015;
  • requirement to set a new password for those filers who are using the same online tax software as last year;
  • some states ask for driver’s license numbers to verify identity; and
  • in some cases, where filers have requested direct deposit of refunds, their refunds will be mailed by check instead.

For example, the Missouri Department of Revenue will make it optional for online filers to provide driver’s license numbers because the extra step provides more assurance that tax refunds will reach legitimate filer

Steps by taxpayers to improve their security

Individuals can take certain precautions with their personal computers and electronic devices to reduce their vulnerability. Experts recommend the following as some more easily implemented:

  • Encrypt tax record documents. File encryption products are many and varied, therefore, “how-to” lessons such as the following example may be helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UIeSOeC5ss.
  • Shred documents with personally identifying information (PII): name, address, birth dates and places, social security numbers, etc.
  • Do not give out social security numbers except to trusted requesters, and do not carry the SS card on your person.
  • Check the web address of the site visited to be sure it has the security lock and begins with https:// before entering any PII.
  • If you are using any of the following, it is a good idea to change them right away and use stronger, individually unique passwords.

25 Most commonly stolen passwords in 2015:

123456 password 12345678 qwerty 12345 123456789

If your identity is stolen…

Report the facts and circumstances to the appropriate authorities. Missouri Department of Revenue guidelines can be found here, reflecting similarities to those of other states, as well. In general, notify the following when you know or suspect that information affecting your tax status has been stolen:

  • Department of Revenue of your state of residence
  • Local police
  • State Attorney General
  • IRS
  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
  • Credit reporting bureaus: Equifax; Experian, and Trans Union.

March is National Reading Month

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

So said Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka “Dr. Seuss,” children’s book author and illustrator of numerous favorite stories such as “The Cat in the Hat,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Born on March 2, 1904, Dr. Seuss died on September 24, 1991 yet his legacy lives on through his stories and characters. Seussville.com offers kids of all ages an interactive and fun experience, while also providing resources for teachers and parents.

Reading is not what it used to be

Reading enhances the lives of everyone at any age, yet how we read has changed dramatically in the past several decades.

Kevin Kelly writing for Smithsonian.com in August 2010 said, lamenting to some degree, that we have changed our reading from books and newspapers to screens on all types of devices – screens on computers and laptops and tablets and smartphones.

He said reading screens encourages utilitarian thinking rather than contemplation that comes from reading books. Kelly predicted that before too long:

Screens will be the first place we’ll look for answers, for friends, for news, for meaning, for our sense of who we are and who we can be.

New ways of reading

Statistics on sales of books-in-print show periods of rise and decline. Meanwhile, technology opened the door to new formats online, the following among them:

Goodreads:  Claims to be the largest online site for readers and book recommendations. Members can catalog their books, share their lists with “friends” drawn from their social media contacts.

LibraryThing:   Members catalog up to 200 books free or upgrade membership for $10 year or $25 life. Early Reviewer and Member Giveaway programs available upon meeting minimum requirements, and more.

Kobo: Access eBooks, magazines for any device at affordable prices.

Bookbub: Access discounted and free eBooks to download to any device under limited time offers.

Overdrive:  Borrow eBooks, audio books from reader’s local library with a valid library card from the particular library.

Audio and talking books…

National Library Service of the Library of Congress serves the needs of the blind and certain other residents of the United States through

…a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail.

Anyone may join audio book club services such as the examples below:

Audible.com:  Membership offers first book free during free trial, then $14.95 per month, and 30% discount on future books.

Audiobooks.com:  – Membership with first book free during free trial, then $14.95 per month for one book; also apps for iOS and Android devices.

A new jail for Benton County, Mo. (?)

This writer first highlighted the sorry state of the Benton County, Mo. jail in November 2014 in another [currently inactive] blogsite (that may someday be revived).

The article, including photos taken at the time: History is Rich, Conditions are Poor at Benton County, Mo. Jail, can be read here.

Now, several months later with conditions even worse, Benton County voters have opportunity to approve new but nominal sales taxes — one-half cent for construction and one-eighth cent for maintenance and upkeep.

Benton County presents its case to the public in the brochure below, reformatted for this article. Copies are available at the County Courthouse, the Chamber of Commerce and several local area places of business.Jail 2

Most important is for registered voters to read, ask the contacts named above any questions that arise, consider the options and alternatives, and vote on April 5, 2016!

A Man of Muscle and Grit

total recall coverArnold Schwarzenegger took a 6,132-mile leap from the obscurity of Thal, Austria to the riches and glamour of Hollywood, California in pursuit of his childhood dream to strike it rich and famous in the bodybuilding world of America. Remarkably, fulfilling that childhood dream became a stepping stone to even greater accomplishments.

Simon & Shuster, New York, published his autobiography in 2012. Arnold recounts his life from birth on July 30, 1947 to the time after his two-terms as Governor of California when the scandal broke in 2011 that led to the breakup of his marriage and family.

Arnold grew up in a small, rural town in a home without inside plumbing, but with plenty of cats. His mother had scrounged and begged for food in the hardest of Austria’s economic times. His father, a policeman, wanted Arnold to pursue a military career. But the young boy became obsessed with bodybuilding after reading magazines with stories and photos of the muscle-bound heroes he would eventually meet and beat in competitions worldwide.

The story is sometimes funny, often fascinating and always entertaining of Arnold’s relentless focus on making his dreams a reality and how, [as Paul Coelho would say,] the universe conspired to help him do so.

Arnold was not content for people to perceive him as a muscle-bound intellectual lightweight. He took his training seriously, worked hard in his own construction business at the same time he worked at a gym, but he played hard as well (i.e., there were women).

While in a title competition in Miami, Schwarzenegger was invited to California under internship with Joe Weider, from whom while body-building, he also learned the how-to’s of business, marketing and entrepreneurship.

He made some early missteps before becoming a successful real estate investor. He partnered with Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis to establish the Planet Hollywood brand that grew through other celebrity investments both nationally and internationally.

Total Recall’s thirty chapters and numerous photographs are thorough in telling about Arnold’s early life as well as how and when he was introduced to the Kennedy family, including Maria Shriver whom he later married.

Politically, Schwarzenegger was Republican in a proud family of Democrats. Not a conservative by any means – he affirmed his pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-lesbian, pro-green agenda. That may have made it easier for Ted Kennedy, and Arnold’s wife’s parents, Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, to encourage and advise him to campaign for public office.

It was Ted Kennedy, he wrote, who told Arnold never to answer a question on a political hot topic directly; rather, redirect the conversation by making a broad policy statement on the way to solve some campaign-related problem.

The interesting and entertaining way Schwarzenegger’s life unfolds holds readers’ attention, yet there are also important underlying themes: the power of a passionate focus on a clear goal; of setting precise goals and of the disciplined and persistent mind-and-body stressing action required to achieve them.

Noteworthy is that Arnold talked about how so many people crowd around the bottom of the ladder – a leader should aim for the top where there is more room and less competition!

  • Could or can or would a poor boy of any color or ethnicity born in the USA do as well as Arnold, the Austrian farm boy with the heavy accent did, to capitalize on the opportunities America offers?
  • How many poor boys, or girls for that matter, or even rich boys or girls in America have such passionate desires as Arnold had, and will attain to a level of success relative to their particular focus?
  • Does Arnold’s success have anything to do with the fact that he had two parents who were strong on discipline, despite the fact that they did not encourage him early on?
  • Does Arnold’s story inspire others to follow their own desires and dreams, or is he just another celebrity with an interesting story to sell?
  • After the scandal broke, did Schwarzenegger lose credibility and the prestige from his more glorious past, or did he retain them despite his human failings?
  •  Schwarzenegger visualized and planned his career starting point, but several other roles opened to him along the way. First a bodybuilder, then Mr. Universe, he became a a business owner and real estate investor, a movie star and then politician and Governor of California!

Understandably, and wisely, he did not reveal many details about the circumstances leading to the affair that broke up his marriage and family. It is uncomfortable and unpleasant to see a strong man embarrassed publicly, even when he deserves to be.

Young men and women need the witness of someone who can “act” like a hero, and actually be one in real life. Arnold Schwarzenegger comes close, and time could be on his side.

Color away boredom, depression and stress!

Welsh brain scientist, Dr. Joel Pearson, says coloring helps adults replace negative thoughts and images with positive ones.

Coloring produces measurable effects

Dr. Stan Rodski, a neurophysicist who also creates adult coloring books says “colorists” enjoy results similar to those from meditation, including changes in heart rate and changes in brainwaves.

Dana Dovey, besides quoting Pearson and Rodski in her article, The Therapeutic Science Of Adult Coloring Books: How This Childhood Pastime Helps Adults Relieve Stress,  clarified that

…adult coloring books are not a cure for disease but an effective coping mechanism for people suffering from cancer, depression, dementia, anxiety, and PTSD.

Adult coloring books a booming business

Writing for Flavorwire.com, Sarah Seltzer asked in August 2015: “Are Grown-Up Coloring Books the Future of Publishing?”

Not long afterward, on December 13, the online New York Post confirmed that adult coloring books are publishing’s hottest trend.

Adult coloring as a social activity

Seltzer said, as part of the trend that bookstores are planning coloring parties, and that groups of adults are arranging coloring lunches. The coloring craze, she says

…isn’t just a way back to childhood, but a path back into a state of creation where process trumps result.

Working on art is a right-brain activity that contributes to mindfulness and adds a bit of whimsy to every day life. Just like children have always done, adults lose track of time while coloring.

No publisher left behind

Publishers Weekly gives most credit to Scottish illustrator, Johanna Basford, for the 2015 publishing craze. Coloring books, traditionally a children’s market item, are sold now by the millions to adults, and nearly if not all major publishing companies in the United States publish them.

Telebrands Press publishes a Colorama package with its own coloring pencils for more than 100 designs.  Most packages sell for $12.99 plus $6.99 for shipping and handling.
