People may find relief from medical bills that are higher than they can afford to pay by asking for a discount based on average prices in the area where they receive medical services. Just as many buyers refer to a bluebook for market values on vehicles, there is also a Healthcare Bluebook where consumers can shop for fair medical prices as well as find tips on how to reduce healthcare costs. Even when covered by health insurance, high deductibles result in being underinsured.
Click on the “Consumers” button for a link to types of procedures. Either allow location tracking via the pop-up, or provide a zip code in the search box provided on the right side of the page. For example, according to the BlueBook, a Complete Blood Count (CBC) in the 65355 zip code area costs $17 on average.
Use the bluebook to find your area’s most affordable providers. If you have already received medical care for which the charges exceed the average, you may negotiate with the provider’s billing manager for a reduction, sometimes up to 25 percent based on the fair price information you’ve researched.
